County Awards for Young People in Care
Flintshire County Council’s Children’s Services Department held two award ceremonies over the summer of 2007 to celebrate the many achievements and successes of looked after children and care leavers.
Young people were nominated by foster carers, parents & social workers for demonstrating outstanding achievement and/or effort in sport, music, academic studies, bravery & community work. There were two winners in each category.
There was also a special achievement award presented for outstanding hard work and achievement over the past year at home and school.
One young person was awarded an achievement prize for sport after representing Wales in a national sporting contest. Another triumphed after graduating with a BA Honours degree in Music. Other children were awarded prizes for overcoming a fear of water, doing well in school, musical talent and being brave whilst overcoming difficulties in their life.
The ‘Speaking for Children in Care Group’ were awarded the top Pride of Flintshire award for community work. The group of children and young people, who grew up in foster care, help the Council to guide the services for children & recently won a prestigious Excellence Wales award on behalf of Flintshire County Council.
Leader of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Aaron Shotton, said: “This was a fantastic evening that celebrated both the achievements of young people in the Council’s care and the work of the Children’s Services team. Congratulations to everyone who won and everyone involved on a very moving and inspirational evening.”
Children’s Services would like to thank the local businesses who supported both events including; ASDA & Tesco who provided every winner with a prize. Other prizes were donated by Blue Planet Aquarium, Boots the Chemist, Chester Quasar, Crocky Trail, Deeside Ice Rink, Liverpool Football Club, Rhyl Pavilion Theatre, Rhyl Suncentre, Somerfield, Tenpin, Vue Cinemas & W.H. Smith.
