Children's Commissioner launches new freephone service for children and young people all over Wales.
Children’s Commissioner for Wales today (23 May) launched a new freephone and freetext service for children and young people all over Wales, giving them the opportunity to get advice and support with any issues or problems they may have. The new phone and text service is totally free, and the number will not show up on any phone bill. It is a bilingual service, so anyone who calls can talk to someone in English or Welsh. If they would feel more comfortable speaking in another language, arrangements can be made to make that possible.
The Commissioner is an ambassador for children’s rights, and aims to ensure they are heard, protected and cared for. The launch of the new freephone and free text numbers will make it easier for young people to get in touch. Maria Battle, acting Children’s Commissioner, commented: “Since Peter Clarke, the first Children’s Commissioner for Wales was appointed in 2001, we have worked hard to help young people all over Wales. Last year we helped more than 500 children to achieve their rights and have their say in issues covering education, health, social services, planning, bullying and abuse, play opportunities, the environment and more. Our hope is that the new freephone and freetext service will increase the number of young people we help each year and really make a difference to their lives. We would encourage any child or young person to get in touch if they think we may be able to help. Both numbers are free and won’t show up on any bill.”
Tanni Grey Thompson, Paralympic Champion has also added her support for this
campaign. She said: "I think it is a great idea for the Children's Commissioner to set up a new phone help-line - almost every young person has the use of a phone and this will ensure that more youngsters than ever can access the services provided. We have a duty to protect the young people in our communities and to listen to and value their opinions on matters that affect them directly and any form of communication that enables this to happen has to be a good thing."
The number to call is 0808 801 1000, or to text use 80 800 and begin the text with COM. For more information please call Ally Forbes, Quadrant, Tel: 029 2069 4900
